High Smog = Free Public Transportation in Paris

By  |

A brilliant quick-fix for smog. Thank you Paris for showing how it’s done!

After extraordinarily warm weather conditions, air pollution levels reached unprecedented levels in Paris.

How bad was it? Experts estimated that the levels of smog recorded in Paris last weekend were similar to those of Beijing, China – one of the world’s most polluted cities.

The city authorities responded by making public transportation and bike sharing FREE for 4 days (Fri-Mon). Then last Monday they only allowed 1/2 the cars on the roads (those with odd-numbered registration plates were allowed to drive, while even-numbered plates would have been fined if caught).

By making public transportation free and limiting the cars, authorities were able to drastically reduce car emissions and quickly reduce the air pollutants to acceptable ranges.

Paris wasn’t the only city doing this. Officials in Reims, Rouen and Caen introduced similar initiatives.
