Internet Everywhere – Plans Facebook

By  |

To bring internet to Asia and Africa, as well as some of the most remote areas in the world, Facebook envisions a fleet of solar-powered drones that will function like cheap satellites.

They will fly as high as 65,000 feet and stay aloft for as long as FIVE YEARS, providing web services to areas below.

Unlike Google’s loon balloons, these drones can also be used for weather monitoring, disaster recovery, earth imaging and other communications.

To make this happen Facebook plans to buy Titan Aerospace – the drone manufacturer or maybe even design something in-house through its Connectivity Lab Project. The plan is to have 11,000 of these unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), bring affordable Internet access to the 5 billion people in the world who still lack connectivity.
